T&DA partnered up with Code on Canvas and Downstream Media to create a learning space for Road to Zero, a world first road safety education complex developed by TAC in partnership with the Melbourne Museum.

Road to Zero draws upon decades of TAC research and pedagogical practice, and is co-created with practicing teachers. Part of the Victorian Government’s Towards Zero vision, it aims to reduce road trauma in pre-learner drivers by building knowledge and awareness that will empower young road users to make safe decisions.

The Road to Zero Experience Space is an immersive and exploratory gallery showcasing the latest in multi-sensory interactive technologies. The primary visual experience T&DA created for our partners is conveyed through a dimensional map that the students can interact with by applying a variety of different scenarios. Each scenario has its own dedicated map and within each map a variety of relevant crash types are depicted. T&DA were asked, as much as technically possible, to design the experience to be an extension of the Museum installations, keeping things realistic and futuristic with landscapes, buildings and vehicles familiarly ‘Australian’ as much as possible.

Our technical approach uses real time 3D, via UNITY. We chose Real time 3D models over pre-rendered isometric bitmap graphics to enable a variety of positive user experience outcomes. These outcomes include, legibility through camera panning and close ups. This is especially important on larger maps (Rural Highway and Arterial). T&DA ultimately created over 80 videos encapsulating all the potential crash scenarios being communicated through this interactive education piece.
